Northwestel Inc. will have a disruption to internet and cellphone service in Iqaluit early Friday, Aug. 4, from around midnight to approximately 6 a.m.

There will not be service for up to five hours during that timespan, the company said in a news release.

The disruption is needed so Northwestel technicians can complete maintenance work on the satellite ground station, company spokesperson Andrew Anderson told Nunatsiaq News.

Iqaluit systems need to be shut down temporarily for technicians to safely access the equipment needed. The work is scheduled for early Friday because those are the hours with the least amount of traffic on the network.

I have been to 17 communities in Nunavut, and Iqaluit has the worst cell phone service by far. Even Grise Fiord has better service.

Never mind routine maintenance. They need a complete overhaul.
