The Maud, still underwater as winter moves in: the Norwegian team attempting to raise polar explorer Roald Amundsen’s ship, the Maud, from the waters off Cambridge Bay is heading home — without the ship. “Before we had to close in for the winter we achieved a front lift on Maud, which gave us invaluable basis for the continuation next year,” Jan Wanggaard, the project manager for the Maud Returns Home project said Sept. 29. “We now have a close estimate for her weight and she is also proved to be in an excellent structural condition, which is all of great importance…. but spirit is high.” The Norwegians will leave their tugboat, the Tandberg Polar, to winter over in Cambridge Bay again, until they can return in 2016.
