The Order of Nunavik is the highest honour awarded by the corporation and recognizes Nunavimmiut for outstanding achievements, leadership and innovation.

Akpahatak, who served as Makivvik’s community director for Aupaluk for almost 20 years, was recognized for her leadership, dedication to preserving Inuit culture and supporting younger generations, Makivvik’s May 4 news release said.

Akpahatak, a former teacher and lay minister, received her award in Salluit during the meeting, the release said.

May was honoured for his contributions to wildlife biology and environment education.

He’s a contributing author to the Quebec Breeding Bird Atlas, a member of the Nunavik Marine Region Impact Review Board and has written publications focused on Nunavik wildlife. He accepted the award virtually.

Makivvik said nominations for the Order of Nunavik are accepted year-round, with submissions for each year closing in mid-February.
