The first week of Toonik Tyme 2013 is drawing to a close, but there’s still lots to do in Iqaluit over the weekend as the 48th annual celebration of the return of spring winds down.
A giant bingo event is planned April 19 at Iqaluit’s curling rink, starting at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m., and $100 will buy you one book.
Also at 7 p.m., Inuit games for youth will be held at the youth centre.
Over the weekend, there’s a fishing derby planed for April 20 in Nungarut starting at 9 a.m. Registration is free and can be done at the Amarok hunters and trappers organization.
Toonik Tyme’s annual seal-skinning contest was to place at 12 p.m. in front of Nakasuk elementary school — but was cancelled at the last minute due to a lack of seals.
Then, snowmobile drag races are planned for 1 p.m. on the sea ice — the entry fee is $100.
For kids and their parents, at the Iqaluit Centennial Library, a family cultural craft program takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
As well, there are adult and family scavenger hunts starting at the curling rink at 1:30 p.m. for families and at 2 p.m. for adults.
Also on April 20, you can see Canadian singer and songwriter Holly McNarland and her five-piece band perform at the curling rink. (See video embedded below.)
The doors open at 8 p.m. and the local band The Trade-offs will also perform at the show, which, because it’s licensed, is only for those 19 or older.
Tickets for the contest are $40 and are available at Ventures Marketplace or at the door.
On April 21, the Nunavut Youth LEAP society is offering a adult full day ski trip starting at 9 a.m. Anyone interested in going skiing can contact Max at (867) 222-1176.

The Toonik feast, including a performance by Iqaluit’s Jerry Cans band, takes place April 21 at 4 p.m. at the curling rink, after being rescheduled from April 18 due to a recent death in Iqaluit.
The Association Francophone du Nunavut Cabane à Sucre sugar shack has been postponed until April 27.
