Nunavut’s MLAs voted unanimously on Thursday, Nov. 5, to pass Bill 25, the Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. The bill sets 2039 as the new deadline for extending the use of Inuktut as a language of instruction across the school curriculum from kindergarten to Grade 12. The step-by-step implementation schedule starts in 2026. Education Minister David Joanasie said the bill is an evolving document that is meant to be amended as it’s implemented. Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., which has long called on the Nunavut government to make greater efforts to teach students in Inuktut, said in a news release that the bill’s passage means the government “chose to join the long history of colonial destruction of Inuit language and culture.” See our story later at Nunatsiaq.com. Margaret Nakashuk, MLA for Pangnirtung, was voted into cabinet on Friday, Oct. 30, to fill the position left vacant when Patterk Netser, MLA for Aivilik, was removed from cabinet last week. Nakashuk won’t take on any portfolios during this sitting, but she will join the ministers on their side of the house and will attend cabinet meetings. She will be sworn into cabinet next week after a motion is passed on Monday. Until then, she’s a cabinet minister elect. Nunavut Health Minister George Hickes receives his annual flu shot on Tuesday, Oct. 20. “The flu shot is something that’s very important not just to protect ourselves but for the people that we are around or come into contact with, like, under the COVID-19 measures, wearing a mask,” he said. This year Hickes was also joined by Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer, who also received a shot. “The flu shot is the best defence against getting the flu and while it does not protect against COVID-19. The flu vaccine can help reduce the number of respiratory infections we see this fall and winter,” said Patterson. “As COVID-19 has similar symptoms to the flu, reducing your risk of getting the flu also means reducing the chance that you will be isolated, while you are tested for COVID-19.” (Photo by Dustin Patar)

The Royal Canadian Mint issued an “entirely Arctic” collector coin crafted with Nunavut-sourced gold. The reverse of the $10 pure-gold coin features an Inuk with a qulliq and inuksuit. It’s the creation of Nunavik artist Ulaayu Pilurtuut. “Motifs of a traditional qulliq, an Inuit oil lamp that provides light and warmth, as well as inuksuit, symbolizing community and guidance, are powerful symbols of the artist’s culture and way of life,” said a news release about the coin’s issue.
