Cops grab weed, ecstasy, cocaine during Iqaluit raid

Four people, as yet unnamed, face drug trafficking charges following an RCMP raid on a housing unit in the 1400s area of Iqaluit, police said Jan. 4 in a news release.

Using a search warrant, cops found “a large quantity of marihuana [sic]” and “smaller amounts of cocaine and ecstasy,” the news release said.

RCMP members from the “V” Division federal policing section, the Nunavut major crimes section and the Iqaluit detachment joined forces to do the raid Jan. 2, the last step of an investigation that had begun earlier.

Police arrested two men and two women, charged them with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, then released them from custody on undertakings.

Police did not release their names. The four accused will get their first court appearance Feb. 25.

Also, the Nunavut RCMP said they seized various quantities of illegal booze over the Christmas break from communities that had imposed temporary alcohol bans during that period.

Cops across Nunavut seized 41 sixty-ouncers, three twenty-sixers, 10 mickeys and a small amount of marijuana.

These seizures will lead to Nunavut Liquor Act charges, police said.
