Photo: C-17 lands in advance of 2015 Nunalivut

A rare sight in western Nunavut: a Canadian military C-17 takes off from Cambridge Bay March 6 after leaving its load of supplies for Canada’s 2015 Nunalivut spring sovereignty exercise. This year’s Arctic exercise will take place off Nunavut’s King William Island where members of the forces will spend 11 days assisting the underwater investigation of the HMS Erebus, one of two ships sailed by the ill-fated Sir John Franklin in 1845, which divers located last summer. “Operation Nunalivut will showcase to the world the extraordinary abilities of Canadian Armed Forces ice divers and Parks Canada’s underwater archaeologists,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said March 4. “I wish all participants the best as they embark on winter dives beneath the Arctic ice to learn more about HMS Erebus.” You can read more about Operation Nunalivut on Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
