Nunavut Sivuniksavut alumni Aviaq Johnston, 21, picked up first prize in a national writing competition for Inuit, Métis and First Nations youth last month at a ceremony in Gatineau, QC. The award was created by Historica, a national non-profit organization that promotes the history of Canada and its people. Johnston's winning story, titled Tarnikuluk, explores some of the intergenerational effects of the settlement of Inuit communities, experienced by the spirit of a young Inuk woman who has recently committed suicide.
