A Nunavut gold mining company is giving $11 million to build 10 homes in the Kitikmeot Region.

The contribution was confirmed Monday at the Nunavut Mining Symposium, being held this week in Iqaluit.

B2Gold originally announced it would contribute $10 million toward housing in the territory in September, during the company’s grand opening celebration for its Goose Mine.

“The agreement has been well received. Obviously, that’s a huge issue up here, housing,” said B2Gold president and CEO Clive Johnson in a phone interview.

Johnson and Nunavut Housing Minister Cecile Nelvana Lyall signed a memorandum of understanding that B2Gold will contribute $10 million for construction and materials, and $1 million for shipping.

The homes will be split between Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay, with each community receiving two public housing units, the Nunavut Housing Corp. said Monday in a social media post.

Nunavut Housing Corp. and the Government of Nunavut will decide who builds the homes, said B2Gold spokesperson Cherry DeGeer. B2Gold will be involved in overseeing construction, Johnson said.

Materials are expected to arrive on the next sealift, with completion expected for the end of 2026.

Firstly it’s how the hiring process is to other regions is to touch base first on their training for both men and women. Here in kivalliq or all of nunavut, gotta first to know the training. Slow, approval from locals, hiring process. Not a fan.
