Iqaluit city councillors have voted to award the contract to expand the Apex cemetery.

The job will go to Ontario-based Dillon Consulting Ltd., which was the only organization to submit a proposal in response to a request for tenders issued by the city in April.

The decision was made at the engineering and public works committee of the whole meeting on Thursday.

The contract is worth $296,000 and includes two phases: design activities, which will be carried out in 2023 and cost the city $144,500; and the construction process, which will cost the city $151,490. That phase is scheduled to begin next year.

The cost of construction is to be included in the City of Iqaluit’s 2024 budget.

The city allocated $175,000 to expand the cemetery in its 2023 budget, of which $10,500 has so far been spent.

The Apex cemetery was built in 2013 for $1.3 million but has had flooding issues since opening, with some families having to bury loved ones in muddy graves.

The city raised the ground level of the cemetery in 2021 and constructed a drainage system to help ease flooding.

Administration originally hoped to expand the cemetery in 2022. Councillors rejected the initial proposal, though, because they wanted to learn more about the cemetery’s capacity.

No mention in the article of when work is to begin?

Dillon sure makes a ton of money off of Nunavut. They’ve been awarded contract after contract with NHC for many years now. Interesting.

Does anyone want to be buried in that swamp?

Anyone know who designed the one built in 2013?

This new on better not have issues and last a long time, since basically half the money is for design.

Also i think if there are issues, maybe this Dillion company should not get any new contracts by governments (territorial or community) till they fix their error. I also think this should go for all companies that get contracts in Nunavut.
