The Nunavut Teachers’ Association and Government of Nunavut have reached a tentative settlement on a new contract.

They came to an agreement May 2 after a week of “collaborative negotiations,” the GN and the association said in a joint news release issued Friday.

The current four-year collective agreement between the government and union, which represents approximately 900 teachers and administrators, expires on June 30.

The new agreement still must be ratified by both parties. Further information will be provided then, the release said.

While details on the tentative agreement haven’t yet been released, Nunavut Teachers’ Association president Justin Matchett said in February that members would look for a salary increase similar to the nine per cent raise that most GN employees received in May 2024.

“That’s just something that we’re going to have to really work hard for when it comes to bargaining,” he said in an interview with Nunatsiaq News.

He also said the government should address the issue of teachers being bullied by students, which he said has been on the rise recent years.

A representative for the Nunavut Teachers’ Association could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Not to mention the abuse and violence they endure, teachers in Nunavut work much harder than most GN employees and their salaries should reflect it.

but only those that do actually work harder.

Because we all know there are some teachers that are just bad baby sitters that put on movies and let the kids watch Youtube.
