The 23-room hotel and 50-seat restaurant will fill a need in the community, said Tommy Palliser, president of Pituvik Landholding Corp.

“There’s a high shortage of hotel rooms in the region,” he said.

The Co-op hotel, owned by the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec, is currently the only one operating in Inukjuak. It has 23 rooms and a shared kitchen where guests can fix their own meals.

Palliser said the community, which has a population of about 1,800, hasn’t had a restaurant in about 20 years.

The new hotel and restaurant will be located near the airport, with construction scheduled to begin in the fall, he said. Total cost is estimated at $15 million.

Community members were invited to offer suggestions to name the hotel and restaurant, and the organization settled on Nanuq Inn and Aarluit Restaurant — nanuq means polar bear and aarluit killer whale, in Inuktitut.

“We had 80 names and one of the names was ‘Finally,’” Palliser said with a laugh. “Finally, a restaurant.”

Pituvik also hosted a logo design contest with $500 prizes for the winners.

Winning entries each featured the animal the venue will be named for —Inukjuak Mayor Bobby Epoo drew the design for the Nanuq Inn, and Jeannie Angela Kasudluak created the Aarluit Restaurant logo.

During construction season, half of the rooms in the new hotel will be used as temporary housing for workers, Palliser said.

A second phase is planned in two to three years to add higher-end suites.

The inn’s logo is obviously AI. I hope they get an artist in Inukjuak to rework the idea behind it.
