A man reported missing in Iqaluit on July 6 is presumed dead, Nunavut RCMP said in a news release issued today.
Jason Kilabuk, 36, was last seen at the Iqaluit causeway boat launch area on July 5.
Iqaluit RCMP, Nunavut Emergency Management Services and Iqaluit Search and Rescue conducted an “extensive search effort along the shoreline and surrounding area of Koojesse Inlet and Frobisher Bay,” RCMP said.
The search included ground, marine and unmanned aerial vehicle searches, police said.
“Unfortunately, search efforts have been unable to locate the missing person. Search and recovery efforts continue,” the release said.
The circumstances surrounding Kilabuk’s disappearance are “suspicious in nature” but “police are not seeking any suspects at this time,” the RCMP said.
Police also said the last person to “have seen or been with Kilabuk is also now deceased in an unrelated matter.”
Police are still seeking information that could potentially lead to Kilabuk’s location. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 867-979-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Iqaluit RCMP thanked the community and volunteers who participated in search efforts.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” RCMP said.
