A 22-year-old man is in custody after shooting at Kimmirut RCMP officers and fleeing the scene Monday.

Police were alerted about a man shooting a firearm from his residence at around 10:30 p.m., RCMP said Tuesday in a news release.

The RCMP issued a shelter-in-place alert.

The man started shooting at the RCMP officers who arrived at the scene, “striking the police vehicle” according to the release, and police took cover.

RCMP issued a second shelter-in-place alert as the suspect fled on an ATV.

The man was later apprehended “with the assistance from a local resident,” according to the release which did not indicate what time that happened.

No injuries were reported.

RCMP have not identified the suspect, who is in custody awaiting a bail hearing according to the release.

The news release does not specify any charges he is facing and RCMP spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie declined to provide
this information, or the man’s identity, until the man appears in court.

Henrie did say the shooting is not related to another incident in Kimmirut last week, where man was released without charges following reports of gun threats, after having what RCMP describe as a “mental health issue.”

Police ask anyone with information on Monday’s incident to contact Kimmirut RCMP at 867-939-0123.

Maybe it’s time for a “boil water” advisory in Kimmirut. There has to be something in the water over there.
The man is lucky the RCMP didn’t shoot back.
    Be safe over there people.
