Labradormiut rebuild heritage from ashes

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A fire in Nain, Labrador on March 8 burned several offices to the ground.

The Torngâsok Cultural Centre, operated by the Labrador Inuit Association, lost all of their archives and files, including reference books, reports, articles and documents on the history, language and cultlure of Labrador Inuit.

In an effort to rebuild the archives, Torngâsok is requesting donations of books, reports, articles, theses, photographs, videos, tapes or any other materials relating to the heritage of the Labrador Inuit.

Peter Whitridge, who is with the archeology unit of the Memorial University of Newfoundland, had offered to collect donations, and store them until new office space is found in Nain.

Donations can be sent to: Torngâsok Library Project, c/o Peter Whitridge, Archeology Unit, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, A1C 5S7.
