A 35-year-old man has died following an ATV-related incident in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik police confirmed in an email to Nunatsiaq News Monday.
The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. Sunday approximately two kilometres outside of town, said Jean-Francois Morin, Nunavik Police Service’s deputy chief of operations.
Another passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“The file is still under investigation, a male is currently detained in connection to the incident and alcohol could have been a factor,” Morin wrote.
“The incident is under investigation so no other information can be shared at this time.”
Morin did not provide the name of the man who died, nor did he identify the person who was injured or taken into custody.
In June, Morin told Nunatsiaq News that Nunavik has seen a rise in vehicle-related incidents in recent years. In some communities, Nunavik police have implemented road checks to test whether drivers are intoxicated.

Condolences to the family. Too many accidents, and too much driving under the influence. I must be not out driving when the police sets up the road blocks to check for drivers under the influence, I never ever seen one , not ever. I don’t need one myself , but when , where, how, and what’s the procedure? Nope, never seen one before in our biggest town.
I was just in Kuujjuaq during Arpik Jam(didn’t go for that but gives a good timeframe) and I think in the 5 days I was there I saw one possible road check, they aren’t doing full road blocks and questioning drivers but I did see one on the road from northern to the new coop, they will park on the side of the road kind of out of view from people driving by until it’s too late to be caught running a stop sign or speeding or any other indicator you may be intoxicated (driving too slow, swerving, speeding, etc.). So yeah not road blocks but road checks so more like speed traps that they do down south.
