Incumbent MP Lori Idlout will again be the NDP candidate for Nunavut in the next federal election.

She was nominated by Nunavut party members at a meeting in Iqaluit on Saturday.

“Lori has done such important work for Northerners and Indigenous peoples in Nunavut,” said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, in a statement released Monday by the party.

Singh — who visited Iqlauit on the weekend — called Idlout “a tireless advocate for the people of Nunavut.”

Idlout, from Iqaluit, was first elected to represent Nunavut in September 2021. Prior to that, she was a lawyer having been called to the Nunavut bar in 2019 after graduating from the University of Ottawa.

She worked as the lawyer for protesters who temporarily blockaded Baffinland Iron Mines Corp.’s Mary River mine in early 2021 while the company was seeking government approval to increase the mine’s output.

“Too few voices are fighting for Northerners and First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples in Ottawa,” Idlout said in the statement.

“For decades, Nunavummiut have lived in deplorable conditions, and they need someone who will advocate for them to change the status quo.”

Idlout made Nunavut history of sorts in August 2021 by being the first candidate in the territory to win her party’s nomination on a coin toss.

Competing for the nomination against Aliqa Illaug, of Clyde River, the two remained tied after two votes by party members. Following party policy written to resolve tie votes, the matter was put to a coin toss that Idlout won.

The next federal election is scheduled for on or before Oct. 20, 2025, as mandated by Canada’s elections act.

For better or worse Jagmeet Singh has squandered the opportunity to take the NDP from a perennial 3rd, or 4th place party to a serious alternative to the Librrals or Conservatives. With Justin Trudeau wearing out his welcome it’s pretty obvious that it will be a PC landslide.

So who are the Conservatives nominating as the next MP from Nunavut?

Given the strong polling they are enjoying I expect the Conservatives will have more luck attracting interest this round.

Terrible news. We are living with the consequences of voting Liberal/NDP. Curious to actual reasons why Idlout would align herself with the NDP…

They are the protest party, a party of idealists unburdened by the complexities of the world. A party that need never concern itself with the difficulties of governing.

I was an idealist once upon a time. Then I learned how the world actually works and began paying income tax.

When I look back on my life it’s incredible how idealistic and motivated I used to be about politics.

I have no one to vote for anymore. NDP, Lib, Con, it makes no difference. If there is a line at the polling station come 5 o’clock on election day I might just drive by. I’ve never missed a vote but I honestly don’t care anymore and I have no expectation that any party will change anything.

I’m not going to waste my time standing in line to cast a vote that doesn’t matter. That is time I could use trying to earn the rest of the $160,000 I need for a downpayment.

if she is elected we will have 8 years total without a voice. She can’t speak up about anything. What is her opinion of JT and how the majority of Canada ans the World think of him?

What is her take on Carbon Tax? on our jet fuel we fly up our food with?

    The current high inflation rates?

WE have not heard anything from her other than revamping food mail. nothing about remote housing initiatives, for power initiatives to go green and away from fossil fuels…..Nunavut is being left in the ice age again when the rest of CAnada is going to LNG and other sources such as hydro….Nunavut is left burning the smae fuel we use to heat our houses.

We do not need an advocate. we need a go getter. Someone who can get us results, someone who can push the government to help us take care of the issues in the North.

    Highest unemployment rate 14%
Highest Suicide rate 5-600 per 100,000
    Highest rate of domestic violence
Highest rate of mental health disorders
    Highest rate of crime
    Highest rate of alcohol abuse
Lowest Graduation Rates 50-60 % and most of them are watered down.
    Highest rate of homelessness
Highest cost to build a new home
    Highest cost of living
    Highest cost of transportation

What can you advocate? Everyone knows the stats, Everyone knows living conditions in Nunavut for the majority are deplorable and are living wards of the state.
