Nikolas Ibey is set to stand trial Nov. 12 in the death of former Nunavut resident Savanna Pikuyak.

Ibey was charged Sept. 12, 2022, with the second-degree murder of Pikuyak, 22, who was his roommate in Ottawa. He was 33 at the time.

Ibey’s charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder.

Pikuyak, originally from Sanirajak, had moved to Ottawa to study nursing at Algonquin College. She had been in the city for less than a week before her death.

The incident sent shockwaves through the small Nepean neighbourhood of Woodvale Green. Dozens of friends, family and neighbours held a candlelight vigil for Pikuyak.

In 2022, the Government of Nunavut created a scholarship honouring Pikuyak.

Ibey’s trial is expected to last about a month, until Dec. 14, with Justice Robert L. Maranger presiding.
