Puvirnituq and Sanikiluaq are among 21 communities that will receive funding for new Indigenous shelters and transitional housing units, the federal government announced on Monday.

A combined $103.8 million will go towards constructing and operating 178 emergency shelters and transitional units across the country.

Emergency shelters are designed to be safe temporary spaces for people escaping family and gender-based violence, while transitional housing provides longer-term security for victims fleeing violence, a spokesperson for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said in an email.

Puvirnituq will receive both a shelter and a transitional unit, while Sanikiluaq will get a new emergency shelter.

The projects will be Indigenous-led and will offer access to support programming and access to culturally appropriate services, a statement from Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu.

The funding breakdown includes:

  • $81 million from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for the construction of 178 new shelter and transitional units
  • $15 million from Indigenous Services Canada for ongoing operational support of the 178 new shelter and transitional units
  • $7.8 million from Indigenous Services Canada to support start up costs for operations

The funding is part of the $724.1-million budget for a comprehensive Violence Prevention Strategy, as announced in the 2020 Fall Economic Statement.

The article before this one specifically stated it was for women. This article says “a shelter for gender based violence”. Which one is it? Both male and female or strictly female?

As for the transitional unit, what do they mean by that? Because, we already have a transit. Are they renewing it? If so, wtg. That building they have now in use is getting moldy and it’s no place for sick people to stay. Very nice staff, though. They deserve it!
