Pangnirtung will try again to elect a new mayor after no candidates signed up to run the first time a byelection was scheduled.
The new byelection date is March 30, Elections Nunavut announced Friday night on Facebook.
Following mayor Lynn Mike’s Dec. 3 resignation after two years in office, a byelection to elect her successor was scheduled for March 2 in the community of about 1,500 residents. However, nobody registered to run.
Under the Nunavut Elections Act, the hamlet council was left with two choices — appoint one of its own members to fill the vacant mayor’s position or order a new byelection.
In an interview last week, Pangnirtung Deputy Mayor Markus Wilcke said council voted Feb. 2 to pursue another byelection.
Candidates can sign up from Feb. 23 to 26 between noon and 5 p.m., and Feb. 27 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., through local returning officer Melissa Akulukjuk at the People’s Community Centre.
Advance voting will be held March 23 from noon until 7 p.m., Elections Nunavut said in its Facebook post. Then on election day March 30, voting will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both events will be at the People’s Community Centre.
As well, a mobile poll will be held March 23 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for people unable to get to the community centre.

I hope Jeremy signs up, we need his best!
