Public consultations set on state of 3 Iqaluit school buildings
Sessions scheduled over 3 consecutive nights starting Sept. 24
Iqaluit residents will get the chance to offer their opinions on the physical state of three of the city’s schools next week.
Over three consecutive nights, public information-gathering sessions are scheduled to be held to help plan for the futures of Joamie, Nakasuk and Nanook elementary schools.
The dates for the sessions are:
- The Nakasuk school session takes place Sept. 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Nunavut Arctic College;
- The Joamie school session is Sept. 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., also at Nunavut Arctic College;
- Nanook school’s session will be Sept. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nanook school.
The consultations are open to the public and are part of the Government of Nunavut’s capital planning process to develop a plan for future school development, according to a Department of Education news release issued Thursday.
Why is the public involved on school consultations? Most of the Nunavut budget is about to be spent in Iqaluit school upgrades leaving Nunavut to fight for the scarps of little $$$ leftover for the next 10 years..

Completely agree, Monty; involving the ‘public’ on this matter is akin to involving the ‘public’ directly in every government decision. Is this ‘consultation intended to highlight that the Government only has incompetent people in its ranks?
Let me save everyone time. Nakasuk is over 50 years old and is falling apart because the GN solution to maintenance is duct tape and hoping for the best.
Its served the community well, but its done. Time to begin work on a replacement.
100% agree Save Time our high school is an eye sore and an embarrassment especially when compared to the billion dollar palace that was built to accommodate the 50 or so francophone students in Iqaluit.
Billion-dollar palace? Fifty francophones? NN spreads fake news and hates for clicks… Where is the moderator? At least explain why the new gym at Trois-soleils (which is rented 7 days a week by the community, not just the francophones) is responsible for the state of other schools in town. Federal money for francophone projects doesn’t go to inuit projects if they are cancelled. Both projects could exist together. Blame the francophones for trying to save their culture and language is pointless. Talk to them; emulate; they are allies to the community.
The French school expansion was done because of a lawsuit filed from a parent wanting more. I think locals/Inuit need to be more involved in order to make these upgrades happen. The French school happened cuz there was pressure from the public, which needs to happen for schools needing upgrades or better education for its students, how does this happen? Public opinions and… parents getting involved in their kids education! Prioritizing their kids needs and education. It can happen but people need to show up and voice concerns, not on Facebook. To actual officials.

i DON`T UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF THIS CONSULTATION PROCESS.
dON`T WE HAVE PROFESSIONALS THAT CAN ASSESS THE SHAPE OF A PUBLIC BUILDING AND THE NEEDS TO CARRY ON THE JOB OF THESE BUILDINGS.
iF YOU ASK PEOPLE TO GIVE THEIR COMMENTS ON ANYTHING THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT EVERYTHING IS FINISHED WITHOUT THE FAINTESS IDEA OF THE ACTUAL NEEDS AND SOLUTIONS.
tHEY WILL ASK FOR NEW, BIGGER AND SHINIER WITHOUT ANY IDEA OF WHERE THE MONEY WILL COME FROM AND WHEN IT COULD BE FEASIBLE.
iT`S LIKE BRINGING KIDS TO A STORE AND ASKING IF THEM IF THEY WANT SOME CANDY.
tHE ANSWER IS OBVIOUS.
eNOUGH OF HIDING BEHIND “ PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS“ INSTEAD OF MAKE INTELLIGENT DECISIONS AND STANDING BY THEM.
i GUESS IT NEEDS A BIT OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE BACKBONE TO STAND BY YOUR DECISIONS.
tHANK YOU
