The Aboriginal People’s Television Network is working with YouTube to bring Indigenous-language programming to the network’s own dedicated channel.
APTN has rolled out more than 1,200 hours of Indigenous-language content to coincide with National Indigenous Languages Day on Tuesday, a network news release said.
“The free, on-demand content includes dramas, special events, lifestyle programs and documentaries in 20 distinct Indigenous languages,” the release said.
“Preservation of language is listed as a crucial element in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation [Commission] report. Through this initiative, APTN is creating opportunities for people to engage with their language — a crucial part of the reclamation process,” APTN’s release said.
During the initial rollout, several Inuktitut television series are being added to YouTube, including Adventures on Inuit Land, Ajungi, Ilonnata: All of Us, Nunavummi Mamarijavut, Our People Our Land, Titurta, Uakallanga and Warrior Up!
More programming is expected to be added by the end of summer, including a dedicated children’s section.
