Iqaluit city councillors will wait until summer to raise the Greenland flag in solidarity with Inuit in the region who experienced threats over the past year from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Municipal leaders voted Jan. 29 to raise the flag, but eagle-eyed Iqaluit residents might have noticed it still is not flying outside city hall.

“Council has determined that it will hold off on flying the flag until the [Inuit Circumpolar Council] general assembly,” said city spokesperson Geoffrey Byrne in an email Monday.

Iqaluit is to host the general assembly from July 22 to 26.

The city will see 66 delegates arrive from across Canada, Alaska, the Chukotka region of Russia, and Greenland. They will spend the week discussing issues that impact Inuit across the circumpolar world.

Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of 56,000, the vast majority of whom are Inuit.

Trump has made several aggressive remarks against the island since he was re-elected in November 2024, including overtures to purchase Greenland and threats that the United States would take control of it “one way or another.”

Nunavut Premier John Main has also spoken recently in support of Greenland.

“Nunavut stands in solidarity with Greenland and supports its autonomy,” Main said in a statement Jan. 13.

“Nunavut shares strong cultural, linguistic and familial ties with Greenland and remains committed to maintaining these important relationships.”

The Greenland capital of Nuuk is little more than 800 kilometres from Iqaluit.

Raising a flag does not do anything to help people that have been affected by violence or threat from anybody. A flag on municipal grounds is not helping anybody but waste money on a flag that will not do anything.

Trump is bad we all know it, but a flag in city buildings is not going to do anything.
