Prosecutors are trying to obtain a victim impact statement from the family of an electrician who died on the job, as they work to resolve a court case against Qulliq Energy Corp.

The corporation is facing with charges under the Nunavut Safety Act relating to the death of Noah Paniyuk, who died in July 2024 in a workplace accident at Naujaat’s power plant.

“We do need a little bit of time to finalize the only victim impact statement,” said Crown lawyer John D. Cliffe, who is leading the prosecution against QEC and participated virtually in court in Iqaluit on Monday.

“Communications have to be made with the family there and the appropriate forms to be completed,” Cliffe said.

The charges against Qulliq Energy Corp. include failing to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of every person at the worksite, failing to sufficiently and competently supervise work, and failing to implement safe work procedures.

Defence lawyers and prosecution have been working on a resolution since Feb. 2. During Monday’s appearance, Cliffe called those discussions “fruitful.”

The case is scheduled to return to court in Iqaluit on April 20.

They lost a husband, father, uncle, the main provider when it came to country food.

Caribou, fish, seals, beluga. Noah was an expert hunter.

Maybe it is still to raw to try and remember for them. Do not need to put this in the paper.
