A Nunavut gold mining company is giving $11 million to build 10 homes in the Kitikmeot Region.
The contribution was confirmed Monday at the Nunavut Mining Symposium, being held this week in Iqaluit.
B2Gold originally announced it would contribute $10 million toward housing in the territory in September, during the company’s grand opening celebration for its Goose Mine.
“The agreement has been well received. Obviously, that’s a huge issue up here, housing,” said B2Gold president and CEO Clive Johnson in a phone interview.
Johnson and Nunavut Housing Minister Cecile Nelvana Lyall signed a memorandum of understanding that B2Gold will contribute $10 million for construction and materials, and $1 million for shipping.
The homes will be split between Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay, with each community receiving two public housing units, the Nunavut Housing Corp. said Monday in a social media post.
Nunavut Housing Corp. and the Government of Nunavut will decide who builds the homes, said B2Gold spokesperson Cherry DeGeer. B2Gold will be involved in overseeing construction, Johnson said.
Materials are expected to arrive on the next sealift, with completion expected for the end of 2026.

Wow!
Between 2 mining companies 21 million in one week for nunavutmiut. Maybe this will get them some appreciation.
That is the attitude they hope to buy with token money. I am not ungrateful for any amount, but what you see is truly peanut money tossed at communities in efforts to get some political goodwill. It’s one of the most common tactics to buy some very cheap good fuzzy warm feelings among public.
I am in no way saying they are bad, employment is the true wealth creator and they offer those opportunities. But don’t ever let your opinion be swayed over a few million dollars because its not even pocket change to them. Its nothing. See AEM’s net income for a single year last year below 4.45 BILLION and that’s net bottom line.
“Agnico Eagle Mines reported a record annual net income of approximately US$4.46 billion for the full year 2025, representing a significant 135.36% increase over 2024, driven by high gold prices and strong production. The company reported a net income of US$1.52 billion ($3.04 per share) in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from $509 million in the same period in 2024”
“B2Gold Corp (BTG) reported a turnaround to profitability for the full year 2025, with a net income of approximately $402 million to $427 million (USD)”
@peanuts. You are exactly correct. This is just another example of how Nunavummiut are continuously gaslighted by the GN and Corporations. It’s a great feel-good story. Right? The politicians get with the Corporate Exec to do the Photo op and handshake, and everyone thinks, “wow that’s awesome”. Lots of back slapping occurs and Corp & GN get to say, “hey see we are doing the hard work, getting things done”. The reality is it is not anything close to hard work or really getting much done at all. Some will say any money is good money and that would be fair. Everyone knows at this point that anything contributed is of value when it comes to housing in the Territory. However, and this is the “rub” that has been pointed out; is when you do real math and some analyses of the contribution vs the amounts being made on the lands of Nunavummiut (for decades) you quickly realize that it is in fact peanuts.
But let’s go with the feel-good story. It’s more fun!
Firstly it’s how the hiring process is to other regions is to touch base first on their training for both men and women. Here in kivalliq or all of nunavut, gotta first to know the training. Slow, approval from locals, hiring process. Not a fan.
So maybe a simple thank you instead of it never enough would bring more in the future. If you have a dog and it bites you every time you feed it gets more and more difficult for you to provide for it.
This is excellent news!! More mining companies should be contributing to basic needs like this. Nunavut impact agreements should include this type of incentive to ensure their miners can continue to live in nunavut. How many inuit are living down south because there is no housing in nunavut?
Are you sure that it’s the lack of housing? I know where I would decide to live if I had the option to earn an inflated Nunavut wage, but live anywhere else. Answer: anywhere else.
