Iqaluit emergency crews extinguished a fire at the municipal landfill Thursday night, and the road to the causeway is now open.

The fire began late Thursday afternoon. The city blocked the road leading to the Iqaluit port to give firefighters room to work.

The crew extinguished the fire just after 11 p.m., according to the City of Iqaluit’s Friday public service announcement.

“Crews remain in the area today to continue monitoring the scene and ensure conditions remain safe,” the announcement read.

City officials didn’t say what the cause of the fire might have been.

“Staff worked extended hours responding to the incident, and we’re allowing them time to complete their work before providing further updates,” city spokesperson Geoff Byrne said Friday morning in an email.

“Any additional updates will be shared as they become available.”

Iqaluit has had several landfill fires in the past, including the 2022 fire that lasted 10 hours and the six-months-long blaze in 2014.
