Iqaluit city council has set a fall deadline for its next call-out to recruit a new councillor, following Joanasie Akumalik’s resignation last month.

On Tuesday night, city councillors voted unanimously to set a deadline for the end of September to receive applications from the public. They chose that date keeping in mind the summer months are when many people might be travelling.

The City of Iqaluit released a public service announcement Wednesday setting that date to Sept. 29.

This means the city will likely advertise for applicants at some point in August.

“I would feel that a fall appointment is reasonable considering our lifestyles throughout the summer — the amount of travel, and the interest paid on the happenings in this chamber,” said Coun. Kyle Sheppard, who chaired the meeting as deputy mayor.

Akumalik resigned June 22 after he was charged with aggravated assault on June 13.

Once a new councillor is selected, council will have five members who were elected in the 2019 municipal election, and four who were appointed to fill vacancies over the course of this term. That includes councillors Kimberly Smith, Paul Quassa and Ookalik Curley, plus whoever is chosen in September.

Send in an application. Guess if the 2, 3 city-council member-selectors love how you think the same, bingo you’re on city council. Like a Babylon Bee Clone/Back article about Dolly and city council rubber stamping sheep. Diversity is our strength, sure didn’t age well.

If so many of our elected Councillors didn’t drop out so easily we wouldn’t be here in the first place.

    Hey, City!
What about all those empty water containers we were asked to store while you were figuring out what to do with them?
    What have you figured out?
How do we get rid of them?
