Military’s Operation Lentus leaves Iqaluit
Air force cargo plane picks up last of the Canadian Armed Forces water purification equipment
A Canadian air force cargo plane approaches the Iqaluit airport Friday afternoon. It arrived in Nunavut’s capital to pick up the last remaining pieces of equipment used by the Canadian Armed Forces’ Operation Lentus. The military ran a portable water purification system from Nov. 8 to Dec. 16 during Iqaluit’s two-month water emergency, which was caused by diesel fuel contaminating the city’s water supply. Approximately 35 military personnel produced more than 307,000 litres of drinking water for the city by pumping water from the Sylvia Grinnell River and running it through a specialized purification system. The last of the equipment remained in Iqaluit over the holidays because of the military’s flight and staff availability, spokesperson Maj. Susan Magill said. (Photo by Corey Larocque)
